In this assignment, students are "moving out" for the first time and have to determine their potential energy consumption and cost in their first apartment. In doing so, they get plenty of practice using electricity formulas (particularly E=Pt in both joules and kilowatt-hours). An appliance power rating reference tool is also provided for many common household appliances.
Students also gain some practical experience by "wiring" a miniature room and drawing a circuit diagram to represent it.
Finally, students work on their persuasive essay writing skills by trying to convince their landlord to replace the appliances in their apartment with newer, energy-efficient models.
