A comprehensive assignment that analyzes a rapidly expanding technology: desalination of sea water to produce drinking water. This assignment also allows teachers to evaluate their students' knowledge of most topics related to solutions (pH, salinity, electrolytes, concentration of solutions).
This assignment also includes the technical analysis of objects, while applying scientific concepts such as evaporation and condensation, and materials science. Students learn about the various methods of desalinating sea water and are asked to provide a written opinion on the best technology to be used for the process in a village in Madagascar.
Finally, students have to use data provided to them to identify water coming in from various sources (lakes and rivers in Madagascar, sea water and desalinated water).
