This is a unit plan designed to explain how to teach the novel In the Time of the Butterflies utilizing rigorous and mostly independent assignments that involve annotating, writing, and discussing in order to foster not just basic comprehension, but also critical thinking. Students are required by the assignments contained within this plan to "read between the lines," not just to regurgitate information that they have been fed. The idea is that students gain their own understandings of the meanings of literature, and not that they memorize and feed back only what they are told to think. The unit encourages them to reach further into the text to answer questions and produce writing and discussion.
