The new LEAP/PARCC assessment will ask students to read one or two passages and then write a composition that includes evidence from the text to support their ideas.
At grade 4, the writing prompt may direct students to write a story, develop an explanation or description, or convince someone of their position.
This sample writing prompt package includes two different pieces of text. Walking on the Moon is a text excerpt from an informational article, and the other is a piece of text from Antarctica Journal.
This is the writing prompt:
Write a composition for your teacher that tells which adventure, walking on the icy waters of Antarctica or walking on the craters of the moon, you would like to experience. Explain why you think this adventure would be the most exciting. Use details from both articles to help you explain your opinion.
I have also included a writing prompt cheat sheet. This document teaches students to analyze the writing prompt, so they can pick out the vital parts to include in their composition.
I call this breaking it up and writing it down.
