This writing prompt/Task is based on a story called Ten Mile Day. This story explains the major events that lead up to the building of the Tanscontinental Railroad.
After students read the story, they are presented with the following prompt:
At the end of the day, Central Pacific had indeed laid more than 10 miles of track. That meant that Union Pacific’s record had been destroyed and Central Pacific had won the competition. Some wondered how the railroad crews managed to lay ten miles of track in one day.
