This is a Third grade writing prompt, but it can easily be used for fourth and fifth graders too.
This prompt includes a text that describes the Northern Lights experience. After the students read the text, the prompt will ask students to:
Imagine that you are a reporter for Science Probe. Your job is to write an article describing the sights and sounds of the Northern Lights as they dance across the sky.
Be sure to include specific facts and details from the text to show evidence of your experience.
Your assignment is to write a newspaper article for the Science Probe describing your Northern Lights experience.
Remember: Readers want to know what you saw, what you heard, and how you felt while you were watching lights dance across the sky.
Of course this prompt also includes the brainstorming page, two rough draft pages and two final draft pages.
My students enjoyed this prompt. They liked the idea of being a reporter for a magazine.
