Students can use this color-coded graphic organizer to keep their work organized when adding & subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.
Write the original fractions to be added or subtracted in the blue boxes.
Write the “1-fraction” that each fraction must be multiplied by to create 2 new fractions with common denominators in the pink boxes.
Multiply across to get your new fractions with common denominators and write your answers in the green boxes.
Add or subtract as required by the problem. Place your answer in the gray boxes. (If simplifying is necessary, use the space to the left of the gray boxes.)
Print the templates in color and place in a clear pocket (communicator, page protector). Provide students with dry erase markers and erasers to practice multiple problems. Repetition is the key to learning this new concept!
