Many students who fail high stakes exams (state exams, PSAT/SAT, ACT, etc.) the first time do so because they do not understand much of the terminology within the exam. Some of the words appear rather simple; however, they may not be as easy for all students especially if they are English learners.
The purpose of this list is to provide a tool through which to help our students become more familiar with the wording of high stakes exams and thus become more comfortable with them.
Some Ideas and Strategies for Using the Terms:
• Use graphic organizers to define, categorize, and use the terms.
• Practice decoding instructions and sample questions.
• Display and use word walls.
• Alphabetize, define, and translate the terms.
