This long-term activity begins with a customized story about a class (yours!). The story is designed to allow you to add student names throughout the story—every student in your class will be included. A MadLib®-type list of characteristics for each student is provided to guide your selection of which student should appear where in the story.
In the story, a class finds some political campaign posters FOR ANIMALS around the school. They are curious about who made the posters and what they are for.
After forming groups in a method you determine (one is provided), students (1) RESEARCH a habitat/biome/ecosystem and select the ONE animal they think is the VERY BEST ANIMAL. Then they each write an (2) INFORMATIONAL PARAGRAPH summarizing their research.
With research in hand, students do (3) NARRATIVE writing as they write an original ending to the story. Finally, an opportunity for (4) OPINION writing is provided as students write a campaign speech for their animal.
Templates for each writing type are included in the Teacher Notes as are hints and “The Author’s Ending” to the story.
