Teens learn to communicate effectively through writing and speaking in Communication 101: Essays and Speeches by Meredith Curtis, a one-credit high school English course.
Students read classic essays, write a wide variety of essays, listen to memorable speeches and give a wide variety of speeches, and read one classic a month in this one-credit high school English course.
Each month students will read a classic essay, look up vocabulary words from within the essay, and write sentences using the vocabulary words. Students will write an essay that is similar to the one they have read. Essays will be read aloud to family or fellow co-op class members.

Students will Write the Following Essays:
- Descriptive Essay
- Narrative Essay
- Letter to the Editor
- Persuasive Essay
- Comparison Essay
- Add Humor to an Old Essay
- Critique or Review
Each month, students will listen to great speakers speak including Ronald Reagan, Maggie Thatcher, Martin Luther King, Winston Churchill, John F. Kennedy, Douglas MacArthur, and famous speeches from movies. All of the speeches can be found on the Sales Page for Communication 101: Essays & Speeches on PowerlineProd.com.
Students will give the Following Speeches:
- Read a Picture Book Aloud
- Introductory Speech
- Demonstration Speech
- Personal Testimony
- Persuasive Speech
We don’t want to forget classic literature this year, so we will be reading and discussing one book a month. Students will read the following books:
- God in the Dock, A Collection of Essays by C.S. Lewis
- The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis
- The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain
- Around the World In 80 Days by Jules Vern
- Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott
- The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne
- A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court by Mark Twain
- Time Machine by H.G. Wells
You will write five timed essays this year to prepare for S.A.T.s and college exams. Clear instructions are given for each one. They will occur during class time.
This is a one-credit high school English course.
