Students often complain that there are just too many things to learn in English. This packet will give your students just one item to focus on and practice for one week. Topics range from avoiding double negatives, to the perils of Spellcheck, to practicing positive language. There are ten of these lessons. You may use these tips in any order or select the ones that will introduce, review, or reinforce your own lesson plans. Each weekly topic contains practical examples and can be used at a variety of different age and grade levels.
I have used these weekly tips for many years and have found that providing a daily reminder helps students maintain their focus. It is important to encourage them to be aware of their own words and those of other people. They may want to keep a daily log to record their observations. After a week of focusing on each topic, ask them for feedback on their results. Practicing any behavior for seven consecutive days will likely result in a positive change.
Each weekly tip contains the following:
* A definition and description of the common error
* Examples of incorrect and correct usage
* Practice exercises
* Answer keys
