Here is a fun project where students build their own settlement to address a challenge that an early community might face. For example, they may need to build a settlement near a river so they have access to food, water, and transportation.
Other possible challenges: fertile soil, harsh winters, disease, building a safe shelter, growing crops, finding good areas to hunt, etc
Students can use a box and art supplies to represent their community. If the student does not like art, he or she can draw a picture, make a Minecraft or Roblox representation, or any other means of showing their knowledge.
Google some pictures of dioramas for ideas.
