This action research projects allows your students an opportunity to make some real change within their school community! Use this in conjunction with a unit about how communities. Discuss how members of a community can make changes by identifying the problem, coming up with possible solutions then bringing this evidence to leaders in the community.
For this activity your students will work in a small group to identify a problem or need within their school. They will then collect data to determine the biggest problem/need by surveying two other classes in the school. After students collect their data they will research ways to solve the problem, and choose the best possible solution. Finally students will use their data to write a letter to the principal expressing their concerns and solutions.
This project will take several days and I would suggest a mini lesson on how text features such as graphs and charts can be used to support their ideas as they are in the rubric.
