Product Description
This set includes 11 different community helper cards with QR codes linked to age-appropriate videos and read alouds designed for students to gather information on each community helper. The set also includes 1 In the Community card with QR codes linked to age-appropriate videos and read alouds designed for students to learn about the different types of communities and the people, places, and things that can be found in a community. The QR codes are linked through Safe Share TV so that students do not see ads and cannot move to another video.

In my classroom, I begin by introducing the concept of a community through the use of the QR codes on the In the Community card and through various books. Then I introduce the idea of research, what it means, and what it looks like. We discuss various sources that can be used to gather research (iPads, computers, books, etc.) After discussing the idea of research, then we walk through, step-by-step, how to research one of the community helpers. We scan the QR codes together, fill out the worksheets together, and create a class poster for that particular community helper.

During this process of researching as a whole class, I show students how to pause the video to stop and take notes on their worksheet and then begin the video again after they took quick notes. Quick notes in the kindergarten classroom mean a quick sketch and possibly labeling the sketch. For example, when watching the video about Tools Firefighters Use, I show students how to pause the video when the word is shown on the video. Then they draw a quick picture of the tool and write the word shown in the video.

After we complete a Research Report as a whole class, students practice researching another community helper through guided practice, but given a little more independence then the first round of researching as a whole class. After we walked through a more guided Research Report, I then have students break into small groups (3-4 students), they choose which community helper they want to research, they research it, and then create a group poster based on their chosen community helper. These activities take place over a 3-4 week period. The goal is for students research 1 whole community helper in a small group, create a poster to display their research, and present the information they learned to the class.
