PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This pack includes resources to teach a unit on community helpers. It includes the following:

*An original poem- "Who Works in Your Town?"- A large copy for your Smart Board, a student reader, and small poems for students' poetry journals

*Syllable Sort- Students will walk around the room, find a word to read, clap the syllables, and write it on their recording sheet under the correct category. {Common Core:RF.1. 3d}

*Scrambled Sight Words- Students will match sight word puzzle pieces to the matching sentence strip, using the picture clues. They will then read the sentence and decide which sight word would complete the sentence. {Common Core: RF.1.3g}

*Sentence Check Up- Students will put words in order to make complete sentences. {Common Core:RF.1.1a & RF.1.3g }

*Picture That- Students will play a pictionary type game where they choose a card to see three words that go along with a community helper. All other students will try and guess the community helper based on the pictures the student is drawing. This activity comes with a recording sheet for students to draw and write about a community helper from the game. {Common Core: SL.1.5}

*Stop, Drop, Vocabulary Roll- Students will match the vocabulary word with its picture and definition. When they finish, they will use the word in a sentence and illustrate it on their recording sheet. {Common Core: L.1.5c}

*Content Word Cards- Use these cards to introduce vocabulary words for this unit. I put them on a thematic content wall for students to reference throughout our unit.

*Student Community Book with anchor chart- Students will create a community book that describes the three kinds of communities {house, neighborhood, town} that they live in. This can be used as a speaking project when students complete their books.

*Which Community Helper Is Most Important?- Opinion Writing- Students will decide which community helper is most important. They will take a voting chip and place it on the class graph and write about why they think that community helper is most important. Included: voting chips, graph labels, and writing paper option. {Common Core: W.1.1}

*Community Helper Letter Paper- Students can write a thank you letter to a community helper that you have come in to speak to them or they can write to the community helper, that they think is most important, telling them why they feel they are important.

*All About {Community Helper of students' choice}- Informational Writing- Students will research a community of their choice and record facts they learn on their graphic organizer. They will turn their facts into an informational writing piece. {Common Core: W.1.2}

*Word Cards & 'All About' Writing Prompts- Display the provided community helper word cards to motivate students' writing. I have also included an 'All About' writing paper for 12 community helpers and a blank one for students to choose their own community helper to write about. {Common Core: W.1.2}

This unit is aligned with first grade common core standards and will help students learn all about what community helpers are, while focusing on literacy!
