"What can I be when I grow up?"
Explore a variety of community helpers in this "flip" book with your students. All the inside pages except the last one are cut smaller to allow your children to collage the uniforms of the helpers. The last page can have a photo of the child's head and it will appear that the child is changing into each community helper!
This book has two sets of book pages, one with only one word for the children to write for each community helper and the second set with the word plus the phrase "I want to be a." Use the pages that are appropriate for each of your students!
The following is a list of the community helpers included:
Select the ones you want to study and copy those pages only!
When I Grow Up! - a writing journal too!
Also included is our writing journal which has two sets of pages for differentiation. With one set of pages, the students only write the word "want" and the name of the helper. The other set has much more writing for each page to complete the sentence "I will be a _______ and I will ________." (Check out the Preview to see samples of each!) The pages have clipart of each helper so the students will know which page to work on. Great for writing stations!
This journal is sold separately: When I Grow Up!
How do I use this book in my classroom?
Your students can create their own copy of this book! Included are all the reproducible blackline masters, full directions, and a color photo page showing the completed pages of the book.
The children create a page a day, using the collage technique. The students follow directions to create the illustration out of construction paper. Included are the complete cutting directions for making circles and ovals from squares and rectangles by trimming off the corners. All you do is cut squares and rectangles on your paper cutter for the pages. The rest is up to the children! Very little teacher time for prepping and no patterns or tracers to create!
There is at least one word on each page for the students to write. We sound the word out together as a class and then the children can copy it from the board or try sounding it out themselves.
When we are finished with the book, we use it at our reading station in place of the published books from our reading program. The children love using their own books and take great pride in them!
