This Community Helpers / Occupation Language Unit is a great source for language development for ELL ESL, K-3 mainstream classrooms and Special Education students.
There are many ways to implement this unit into your lesson plans and classroom. Many modifications and differentiation can be done to make this work best in your classroom.
-vocab cards/ word wall cards
-write around the room flashcards and worksheet
-compare/contrast writing activities
-bubble maps of various community helpers
-end of the unit assessment
How I use this unit in my classroom:
-flashcards in our classroom pocket charts for writing and speak activities
-mini picture sheets are placed in homework binders to study at home (I put the sheets in pocket protectors)
-worksheets are done as guided practice at the start of unit, then used as independent work for Daily 5 stations.
-write around the room as Daily 5 station or as a whole group activity
-I pre/post assess each theme vocabulary
-formal assessment given at the end of each unit
There are many ways to differentiate and modify these activities.
As always, do what is best for your class!
