What a better way to show students that no matter their differences they are still 'one community'. Great beginning of the year activity. Each student makes a puzzle piece and the puzzle pieces will go together. Students make this puzzle piece to fit who they are. I met with each student to make sure they knew they were special and how much they added to our class. We put ours up in the hallway to show our similarities and differences. During this lesson, we also touched based on the definition of community, and as a class we made up our own classroom community definition!
IF YOU WANT AN ACTUAL PUZZLE THAT FITS TOGETHER: First of all, Google 'blank puzzle with ___ pieces" with however many students you have. When making the actual puzzle pieces, I used the overhead projector and copied the puzzle from google onto poster board. I cut each piece out and made sure to number the back of each so I knew the order when we put our puzzle together. I really like when the puzzle goes together, because the kids enjoy it so much more and I think it gets the message 'that we are 1' across more clearly.
