This comic strip version of Como la vida misma, created by one of my talented students (she will receive half of the proceeds), is a great introduction to what transpires in this literary work. Additionally, this pre-reading activity front-loads the students with some important lines and quotes from the character, bringing the student up to speed on the personalities and their purposes in this famous work of literature.
The one page comic strip comes with 4 pictures to get students thinking about the themes associated with the story.
Spacing has been purposely left after most of the phrases to allow for students to:
- make a comment
- note the significqance
- or write an example of a rhetoric device used.
In their entirety, the above build-up activities are used as a scaffolding piece. I use them to create a group discussion around the pertinent themes. Students in our AP Language and other courses (Heritage and 3 Honors) have also utilized this comic strips as a form of preparation, or vertical teaming, for the AP Spanish Literature and Culture class.
Students transition much more effectively into the play because they have a clear visual representation in their mind of the character and the story line.
