Credit for this unit can vary depending on the demands of the coursework required of the student and the student’s grade and ability levels. It was originally designed to fulfill one quarter of credit in English for an average-achieving high school senior as a means of credit recovery.
All internet links are currently active as of the date of this publication and are free and accessible to the public. Both books are commonly available in public and school libraries making this an excellent project for students to pursue on their own with scheduled checkpoints, as indicated by the student’s needs, with the supervising teacher.
Either traditional letter/100-point grading, or standards-based grading, can be used.
Two versions of the assignment handout are included: one for the student, and one for the teacher which contains specific Common Core Standards addressed by different elements of the task.
Finally, a grading rubric follows, breaking down achievement for each of the Common Core Standards identified.
