Students love the rubric that goes along with this assignment because it tells them exactly what they need to do to improve their essay before they write the next draft, and the format makes it very easy for them to understand. Teachers love the essay format because it takes the students through the process of writing a first draft in a step by step fashion, choosing a topic, brainstorming, outlining, and then finally creating a first draft. This essay is very formulaic, but I have found that students who are new to the North American rhetorical style respond well to this teaching method. The essay includes two prompt choices for students and space for you to add your own prompt. The rubric is tailored to reflect the content of a contrastive essay topic. There is also space in the rubric designated for you to add items of your own that you would like to emphasize in the assignment, and there are spaces to write in points if you want to assign points to each category. The rubric also contains a section at the bottom to evaluate and give credit for improvements made in subsequent drafts.
I think you will enjoy using this rubric with students since it has worked very well for me over the years. If there is anything I can do to improve upon the assignment for future users, please leave feedback.
