Students read a short story about a mother and daughter who are trying to determine if an insect is a butterfly or a moth. The characters find facts about each type of insect. The directions tell the students to write an essay about the ways in which moths and butterflies are similar and different. I've included a Compare & Contrast Organizer for students, a Compare & Contrast Writing Rules handout with examples, and a grading rubric (self, peer & teacher). All handouts are both in PDF and Microsoft Word (so you can add or change things as needed.) There are no cute borders, cute clip art or creative formatting. I try to maximize space and make things neat and organized.
