This mini-unit was created to use with the following common core state standards:
RI.2.9: Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic.
RI.3.9: Compare and contrast the most important points and key details presented in two texts on the same topic.
RI.4.9: Integrate information from two texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably
This unit can be used in 1 day or spread across three days.
Day 1: The class reads the two articles about the pros and cons of having an indoor dog. The students compare and contrast the two articles using the provided Venn diagram.
Day 2: The class rereads the articles and Venn diagram from the previous day. The students answer multiple-choice questions that assess students’ ability to compare the texts and draw conclusions from the texts.
Day 3: The students reread the articles to write their own report. They use the information about the pros and cons of indoor dogs to write a report titled, “Dogs Make Great Indoor Pets!” or “Think Twice Before Bringing Dogs Inside!”
