Show your students the similarities and differences between solving equations for one variable and solving a literal equation for a specified variable. Equations on the left represent equations that they can solve using inverse operations and undoing. The problems on the right have variables ONLY, but require the exact same steps as the equation that they just solved on the left. I have found this SO helpful in introducing literal equations. It has made a huge difference in my students' understanding of the concept!
