CCSS - KCC(7)
"Compare These..." is a series of nine student puzzle books each comprised of one hundred sixty five inequality puzzles. They serve to promote number sense, logical and mathematical reasoning, and communication skills essential to every student’s mathematics education.
While similar to the entertaining and popular inequality puzzles known as Futoshiki, "Compare These..." puzzles have the added advantage of not being restricted to comparing whole numbers 1, 2, 3, ..., n, in which n denotes a puzzle’s dimension. This allows for the use of inequality puzzles at various grade levels in which different number representations are being learned and through which number comparisons are made.
In Volume 1 (K), students are initially required to compare the numbers 1 through 10, two numbers at a time, by solving 2 x 2 puzzles. The inequality symbol has been replaced by Ali the Alligator's jaws which always "eat" the bigger number next to them. Once students are familiar with Ali and the rules of the game, they can begin solving 3 x 3 puzzles.
