“Compare and Contrast” introduces the concept of comparing and contrasting to the K-1-2 emergent reader: To better understand how they are the same and different, students compare and contrast descriptions of themselves of how they were back then - as a baby - to now, now that they are older.

Suggested Use:
Kindergartners – who are “ready”
First Graders – on grade level
Second Graders - who need review or additional practice
Others - who need remediation

Directions:
Students make a “Compare and Contrast” booklet: With teacher-suggested questions (and example responses) for guided reading, the student will...

-Read and identify the main topic.
-Retell key details of the text.
-Ask and answer questions about key details found in this informational text.
-Describe the connection between the two people shown in the text.
-Use the illustrations and details in a text to describe the relationship.
-Identify basic similarities and differences found in this text.
-Identify the reasons an author gives to support points in an informational text.

Hands-on activities include cutting and pasting, drawing and coloring, and completing the compare and contrast worksheet/s. Note: The colored graphics print out fine in gray scale also.

Lesson Extension: Read your “Compare and Contrast” booklet to a partner, a small group, or your class. Describe your illustrations by comparing and contrasting similarities and differences.

Vocabulary terms and concepts include the following: same/different/difference; similar /similarities; compare/contrast; describe/description; illustrations, main topic, identify, text

Additional Materials: Teacher directions, a cover for student’s booklet, suggested questions for guided reading (with response examples), six graphics needed for cutting and pasting, CCSS for Kindergarten, and CCSS for First Grade
