PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This product contains several activities to help students practice the academic language of comparing and contrasting as well as writing comparison and contrast paragraphs. It includes modified versions, which have been changed to serve the needs of students who may be English Learners or who may need support and/or more simplified language tasks.

Activity 1: Compare / Contrast Language Search (4 pages)
- Students mark language used to compare and contrast in an article about alligators and crocodiles
- Students fill out a T-chart with similarities and differences
- Answer Key / Possible Answers

Activity 2: Compare / Contrast Language Search – Modified (4 pages)
- Same as Activity 1, but with an article that has been modified (shorter, lower reading level)

Activity 3: Comparing and Contrasting – Vocabulary Sort and Write (2 pages)
- Students sort vocabulary cards into “compare” and “contrast” groups
- Students write additional example sentences with the language
- Contains student directions card

Activity 4: Comparing and Contrasting – Vocabulary Sort and Write – Modified (2 pages)
- Same as Activity 3, but with fewer vocabulary cards and simplified example sentences

Activity 5: Comparison / Contrast Paragraph Examples (3 pages)
- Three versions of a comparison paragraph and a contrast paragraph based on the alligator and crocodile article
- Version 1: Compare/contrast language and transition signals highlighted or marked in bold and color text (to project on a screen or print in color)
- Version 2: Plain text (if you would like to have students mark or help you mark the key language together)
- Version 3: Compare/contrast language and transition signals marked with underlining, circling, and gray highlighting (best for printing in black and white)

Activity 6: Comparison / Contrast Paragraph Examples - Modified (3 pages)
- Same as Activity 5, but with shorter paragraphs and simplified language

Activity 7: Parts of a Comparison / Contrast Paragraph (2 pages)
- Students create a color key to mark the different important elements of a paragraph in the example paragraphs from Activity 5

Activity 8: Parts of a Comparison / Contrast Paragraph - Modified (2 pages)
- Same as Activity 7, but with the modified paragraphs from Activity 6

Activity 9: Comparison / Contrast Paragraphs - Directions and Score Sheet (2 pages)
- Directions for students to write their own paragraphs (I had students choose two animals to compare, but whichever topics suit your class are great!)
- Requirements listed for each element of the paragraph
- A score sheet to help you grade their paragraphs
- I would give both sheets (copied back-to-back) to students so they know exactly how they will be graded

Activity 10: Comparison / Contrast Paragraphs - Outlines (2 pages)
- Outlines for students to use to write a draft of their paragraphs
- Word banks with comparing/contrasting language and transition signals

Activity 11: Comparison / Contrast Paragraphs - Outlines - Modified (2 pages)
- Same as Activity 10, but with larger spacing and sentence frames instead of word banks for comparing/contrasting language

Note: I left some of the directions on activities less specific so that you have the freedom to direct students as best suits your preferences. I hope you find these worksheets useful!
