This is a full lesson about food chains and food webs. Students should already have basic knowledge of predators and prey before this lesson. Through the course of discussion throughout this lesson, the main idea the students should learn is that both diagrams show the flow of energy in an ecosystem, and that they both show interdependence; however, a food web would give a more realistic picture of how an ecosystem would be effected if an organism’s population changed, or became extinct.
The lesson includes:
--A food web of the Florida Everglades made from photographs of the animals in their habitat
--A food chain of the Florida Everglades (a chain from the food web) made from photographs in their habitat
--a comparison matrix that can be used for gathering notes in order to compare and contrast food chains and food webs
--a Venn-diagram, which allow students to really dig deep into what food chains and food webs really tell us about the flow of energy in an ecosystem, as well as interdependence.
--a pre and post-assessment sheet
