Product Description
This unit is designed to give students practice with close reading while focusing on comparing and contrasting non-fiction text.

There are four sets of original text. Depending on students reading level, the text could be read the first time as a whole group or individually. On the second reading, students can focus on finding key or main ideas.

Each set of articles include:
Two one-page articles on similar subjects.
A vocabulary sheet to go over before or after reading through
the text or as a review.
A VENN diagram or a chart for students to use comparing
and contrasting.
A text-dependent question sheet which focuses on
comparing and contrasting the key ideas, details or
text features in the text.
One set has a short writing frame with HINTS so that students
can write two paragraphs comparing and contrasting.

The VENN diagrams, charts and vocabulary activities help students prepare for answering the questions.

The questions are all about finding the answers in the text. Some are tricky because the facts in multiple choice answers may all be true, but only one will answer the specific question. The emphasis is on comparing and contrasting.

It is not necessary to do all of the sets in the unit. Each set stands alone. They can be used for whole group instruction, for intervention or enrichment groups.

Topics include:
Baseball and Soccer
Butterflies and the Blue Morpho Butterfly
Whales and Dolphins
Halloween and The Day of the Dead
