Description

Science Skills: Understanding how to compare and contrast in a science class.

Suitable for Biology and Life Science students in grades 8 - 12.

Most science teachers would agree that students who have developed good "science skills" will be far more successful in a science class than those students who simply memorize a laundry list of science facts. This product offers a lesson (or a review) in "comparing and contrasting" for the science student.

What will the students be doing?

Begin this lesson with the short PowerPoint presentation (9 slides) that is included. It will help the student to understand what it means to "compare and contrast". During the Powerpoint presentation, students are asked to compare two living organisms. The students will make a list of the similarities and differences between these two organisms. After comparing and contrasting the two organisms, the student will determine why these similarities and differences are important to these organisms.

The PowerPoint presentation is followed up by the 5 page student worksheet. As this worksheet is completed, students will practice over and over the skills of comparing and contrasting. Questions are thought provoking and require problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Answer key is included for the teacher.

This lesson can be used at different times of the year. I have used it at the beginning of a school year to get my students "thinking like a scientist." I have also used this Powerpoint and worksheet when teaching a unit on classification and taxonomy. This lesson would also work extremely well when teaching a unit on Evolution.

Your download will include a short PowerPoint presentation, the 5 page student worksheet and a 3-page teacher answer key. The worksheet is included as both a Word document as well as a pdf.
