Are you looking for a fun and creative way to teach students to compare and contrast? Do you want to reinforce story elements at the same time? Perhaps you want your students to do research and identify the main idea and key details of a story and then summarize it. If so, then this is the activity for you!
My class of third graders truly enjoyed comparing and contrasting two folktales, Rabbit Races with Turtle (a trickster tale) and The Tortoise and the Hare (a fable), with this interactive and educational craftivity.
They used the graphic organizers included in this download to gather their information and the compare and contrast story frame to help them with their stories. Once their stories were completed, they crafted their turtles and put all of the pieces together to create this interactive flap book craftivity that covers several standards at once.
This craftivity could also be done to compare and contrast two informational texts about turtles. Students can do research from two different sources on these delightful creatures and compare and contrast the information found.
Several options have been included in this download to differentiate across a broader span of grade levels. A variety of standards can be introduced and/or reviewed with the different options provided. Standards include story elements, compare and contrast, identifying theme and/or central message, summarizing, and main idea and key details.
In this download, you will receive:
Lined paper with both thin and wide lines
Compare/Contrast Story Frames (turtle specific and nonspecific)
Compare/Contrast Graphic Organizers (turtle specific and nonspecific) - three different options of each, including Venn Diagrams
Main Idea and Key Details Graphic Organizers
Plus, all of the pattern pieces (tracers/templates) needed to complete the craftivity as well as step by step directions with photos.
This makes an adorable yet informative bulletin board or hallway display when finished!
Please note that the folktales referred to as well as any informational text pieces are NOT included with this download, but information can be found easily in books and on the internet.
