Product Description
This is a great way to incorporate the holidays into an expository writing assignment where students will compare and contrast the holiday figures of Santa Claus and Krampus. This product contains a PowerPoint which will primarily guide the lesson. It also includes Microsoft Word documents of the necessary texts (the poem “’Twas the Night before Christmas” and the article “Santa’s Horned Helper: The Fearsome Legend of Krampus, Christmas Punisher”). Lastly this product contains a paragraph checklist to ensure students meet the writing requirements.

Students will initially use background knowledge to describe their memories and associations with Christmas time. In addition, they will analyze the song “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and several images depicting Christmas. Then students will focus on their background knowledge specifically of Santa Claus. After discussing Santa, students will learn about the legend of Santa Claus and the history of St. Nicholas, as well as Santa Claus in popular culture throughout the years. Students will then read the poem “’Twas the Night before Christmas” with instructions to highlight/underline details pertaining to Santa Claus, such as physical description, personality, and how other’s perceive him. Students will then be introduced in the next two PowerPoint slides to images of Krampus, where they are instructed to list details describing his notable characteristics. There is a link to the movie trailer (optional depending on age you teach). After being introduced to Krampus, students will read the article “Santa’s Horned Helper: The Fearsome Legend of Krampus, Christmas Punisher.” Once again, they are instructed to highlight/underline details pertaining to the physical description, personality, and other’s perception of the Christmas character. Students should also be looking for similarities between Krampus and Santa Claus. There are four slides containing images that correspond with the Krampus article.
After students have fully researched Santa Claus and Krampus, students are instructed to complete a Venn diagram with a partner comparing and contrasting Santa Claus and Krampus using the details from the poem and article focusing on their physical description, how others perceive them, items associated with them, and their purpose/job during the holidays. After completing the Venn diagram, students have directions to complete a four paragraph essay (could vary in length depending on what you prefer) with a detailed breakdown of what needs to be included in each body paragraph (topic sentence, detailed support with citation, and wrap up sentence).
