When writing the compare/contrast essay, I often use food as the teacher demonstration. I let the students give me the topics, and I walk them through idea development and organization. In this case, I am showing the students how to develop their ideas using the restaurants Subway and McDonalds. I demonstrate on an overhead projector how to separate and list a set of similarities and a set of differences for two topics. I then give the students this handout to work on with their essay topic in the same way.
