Product Description
This activity sheet was originally developed to coincide with the Lucy Calkins Reading Units of Study, Grade 3 Character Studies, Session 16, "Readers Compare the Problems Characters Face-and Their Reactions". I began by modeling this work with our two mentor texts, Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo and Make Way for Dyamonde Daniel by Nikki Grimes. We completed this chart, comparing the problems Opal and Dyamonde face, and how they both react to those problems. I then broke the students up into their book club groups to compare the main characters in their book club books to Opal in Because of Winn Dixie. For our "Share" session, students shared out HOW their characters reacted similarly or differently, using evidence from each text. This can also be used as an independent activity to assess students' comprehension, or as a higher level skill, comparing across two texts.
