✎Create a new level of engagement and support for ELLs and visual learners with these task cards for the New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies that include matching labeled photos. This center challenges students to read clues, determine the described group of colonies, and record their answers. Photos are included to match each Comparing Colonies task card and are used to support students and differentiate the activity to meet student needs.
: The labeled photos also make beautiful Social Studies word walls that students love using!
My energetic students love when I tape these task cards around the room to let them MOVE while reviewing colonies.
New England, Middle, & Southern Colony Concepts Included
These 10 Comparing Colonies Task Cards require students to read closely and use clues to determine their answer, which integrates the reading skill of making inferences. Meaning, this activity is awesome for a cross-content reading center -- helping to squeeze in more desperately needed Social Studies time!
2 Ways to Play
1. Less support: Search the Room
Post the cards around the room. Independently or in pairs, students locate task cards, read the clues carefully to determine which word bank word is being described, and record their answers on their answer document. (For added support, students can carry the labeled photos with them to refer to as needed.)
2. More support: Stationary Center
Provide students with the task cards and photographs of the answers. Students match the picture cards with the task card descriptions and record their answers on the response sheet.
This activity is based on 4th grade Social Studies standards.
