The following three Comparing Decimals Base 10 Organizers challenge the students on the following math common core concept: CCSS.Math.Content. 5. NBT A.1: Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents to its left. The first two organizers provide a starting number (see preview). The students must then provide the number that is 10 times greater and the number that is 10 times less; as a teacher, you will use this to assist the students in understanding place value at a higher level. The number to the left is 10 times greater, and the number to the right is 10 times less. The students will also see how the decimal movement causes changes in powers of 10 or 1/10 depending on the direction the decimal travels. On the third organizer, the students will be given the number that is 10 times greater and the number that is 10 times less and be asked to provide the starting number.
