PLEASE NOTE: The 3rd and 4th grade version of Pirate Day are very similar. There are only a few minor differences. Third graders are expected to compare fractions with alike numerators or denominators and only compare fractions with denominators of 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, or 8. Fourth graders compare fractions with different numerators or denominators and compare fractions with denominators of 1-12.

When many people think of classroom transformations, they think:

“This would take me hours to set up.”

“This is going to cost so much money.”

“This looks so overwhelming.”

“I could never do this!”

What if I told you classroom transformations could be EASY to set up, FUN to implement, and STRESS-FREE?

Let's Start with the Basics...What is a Classroom Transformation?

A room transformation changes your room into a certain setting or theme to engage students in their own learning with rigorous content.

Classroom transformations are possible in EVERY classroom. You don’t have to spend hours of your time setting up a classroom transformation or spend lots of money to make it SO MUCH FUN!

Skills Included

comparing fractions with pictures

comparing fractions with fraction strips

comparing fractions with common numerator and common denominator

comparing fractions with number lines

comparing fractions error analysis

comparing fractions with any strategy (even cross multiplying)

A Quick Description

Help your students become pirates in your classroom! Students complete 10 comparing fraction challenges that are real-world pirate-themed math problems. This math activity is perfect for 3rd graders. It aligns with 3.NF.3.

Print out all 10 pirate posters and all 10 aligned challenges. Distribute them around your room. Give each child a recording sheet. Explain to students that they will become pirates and will need to complete all ten challenges! They have to find all ten challenges you've left around the classroom and solve the challenge that the pirate needs to complete. They use the recording sheet to mark off each challenge as they go.

How to Play

Step 1: Tell your class that they are pirates today and will practice comparing fractions. Students solve math challenges set up around the room. They can be completed in any order and you can choose how many challenges students complete or what time frame they have to meet YOUR needs.

Set-up is quick and easy. Simply print the 10 posters, the math worksheets, and a recording sheet for each student. Place them around your room and you’re ready to begin! Additional door décor, editable name tags, editable admission tickets, and themed banner are included if you want to use them!

Step 2: Let students move around the room and solve each challenge! Each time students solve a math challenge, they go to the teacher to get it checked. Students can work independently, in partners, or groups. Your choice! Every challenge contains multi-step word problems and aligns with 3.NF.3.

Step 3: When students finish all ten challenges (or however many you assign), they win! You can give them the certificate of completion included. I also reward my students with treasure booty! (HW pass that's included).

Step 4: Most of the time, there are early or fast finishers! These kiddos get to go around the room and scan the QR codes provided! Each QR code leads to a fun fact about pirates that they can record on the sheet provided or a piece of notebook paper. This keeps everyone happy and on task!

There is an editable challenge paper included. This means if one of the challenges doesn't work for your classroom, you can make your own! There are ten pre-made challenges included for you to use but we all know sometimes changes are necessary to best fit your classroom :) These challenges are aligned to Common Core and TEKS.

This is a perfect review activity before giving a fraction assessment or as an extra practice activity. Step by step lesson plans are included so you know exactly what to do. It can be used as a spiral review and is easy to set up and implement. The QR codes add in technology as well. Classroom transformation ideas are a new trend in education and can set the stage to engage!

These classroom transformations can be used for elementary children as a worksheet alternative, printables, in math stations, center rotations, math centers, as enrichment or remediation, in small groups, as test prep, as worksheets, escape room alternatives, homework practice (take what you don’t finish home for homework), digital theme days, end of year themed days, classroom transformation kits, printables, and so much more!
