This pack includes everything you need for a two-part mini unit on comparing fractions. It is perfectly aligned to the Grade 3 Math CCSS (compares fractions with like numerators OR denominators; limited to denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8.)
Each part includes 5 lessons, 5 exit slips/ formative assessments, a pre/post assessment, and a scoring rubric. These lessons are designed to be completed in a 60-minute math block, after a mini-lesson that teaches the strategy.
In Part I, students will learn different strategies to compare fractions with like denominators. I've found that many students can identify the bigger fraction when both fractions have the same denominator, but they have misconceptions about WHY that fraction is bigger (they just look for a fraction with any bigger number in it). This has a huge influence on how they compare fractions with like numerators, so these lessons have a heavy focus on vocabulary and reasoning to deepen understanding of the content.
In Part II, students will learn how to use the same strategies to compare fractions with like numerators. Again, there is a focus on vocabulary and reasoning.
All materials in this pack were created by me and are used in my classroom. :)
