Students who have good fraction number sense will be successful later in Algebra. Fractions do not adhere to the rules of whole numbers because they are rational numbers. So students need to build fraction number sense by comparing fractions based on piece size and the number of pieces represented (denominator and numerator). Students need to see fractions as a number and be able to use math tools such as fraction bars, fraction strips, tape diagrams and number lines to represent them.

Use this PowerPoint to build a conceptual understanding of how to compare fractions. Students will learn the strategies for using the numerator or denominator to compare fraction sizes. They'll learn to use math tools such as area models, fraction strips (tape diagrams), and number lines. All of this builds that fraction number sense.

How it Works

The PowerPoint is divided into 6 parts. Parts 1 and 3 teach a specific strategy to compare fractions, while Parts 2 and 4 are the practice parts for those strategies. Parts 5 and 6 give students the opportunity to use those strategies and math tools (tape diagram and number lines) to problem solve.

Each part has explicit directions for the teacher in the Presenter’s Notes (also included as a PDF document). The Presenter’s Notes give directions for the animation sequence, teaching points, mathematical questions to ask and answer key if applicable. Parts 2, 4, 5 and 6 include an accompanying printable that the students use in conjunction with the PowerPoint.

PowerPoint Sections


  • There is a Pre-Activity included that helps students build some conceptual understanding using pattern blocks and a Unit Fractions Sheet. The later helps students establish one-whole and one-half as benchmarks.

Part 1

  • In this part, students learn to compare fractions with like denominators but different numerators. In this initial sequence, students will see an area model visual to compare fractions (fraction bars or rectangular models).

Part 2

  • In this part, students are given a printable worksheet that they use to answer 10 questions using the strategy explained in Part 1.

Part 3

  • Similar to Part 1, but now working with different denominators and same numerator fractions. Again, students will see an area model (rectangular or fractions bars) to then compare denominator sizes.

Part 4

  • In this part, students are given a printable worksheet that they use to answer 10 questions using the strategy explained in Part 2.

Part 5

  • The students are now given an opportunity to use those strategies by transitioning to a measurement model using fraction strips or tape diagrams to solve 5 word problems.

Part 6

  • Another opportunity for students to use strategies by transitioning to a measurement model using number lines to solve 3 word problems.
