### Description

Elementary students learn how to compare fractions using visual models showing length. This digital notebook uses embedded videos to visually make the math show students how to compare fractions using numerators and denominators. Students also practice problem-solving and reasoning about fraction sizes.

This digital notebook supports some of the number sense standards for

• Common Core State Standards - Mathematics, grade 3 (3.NF.A.3)
• TEKS grade 3 mathematics (MA.3.3.H)
• VSOL grade 3 mathematics (NS.3.2.c)
• Ontario Math Curriculum Grade 4, (Number Sense and Numeration)

HOW IT WORKS

• The digital notebook can be used for in-class instruction, a hybrid in-class and distance learning model, and complete distance learning. Use it to support your in-person or virtual lessons on comparing fractions.
• Teach a lesson, then use selected slides from the digital notebook as
• guided practice
• independent practice
• homework
• The 3 embedded tutorial videos support the students. Also, the Speaker Notes (Presenter Notes) section has more detailed directions for the students. A Tech Tips page for the student explains how to use some of the notebook's features.
• Additionally, suggestions and recommendations for supporting mathematical reasoning in the digital notebook can be made by
• Providing feedback through the Google Slides commenting feature or using the included scoring sheet.
• Using the suggested sharing opportunities of the student slides to promote mathematical discourse.
• Using the suggestions for modifications and adaptations of the digital notebook for English Language Learners and Students with Disabilities.
• Using virtual manipulatives (links provided to FREE virtual manipulatives)

HOW THE DIGITAL NOTEBOOK IS SET UP

• The digital notebook has 40 slides divided into three parts and an additional student reflection section. Three sections include practice at DOK levels 1 - 3

Part 1: Using Benchmark Fractions to Compare

• In this section, the students learn to compare fractions with the benchmark fractions of 1/2 and one-whole. They learn and practice with
• a Notice and Wonder activity
• an embedded tutorial video explaining benchmark fractions (with audio narration)
• 5 practice slides using benchmark fractions
• a problem-solving activity involving a real-life context and using benchmark fractions
• a problem-solving activity in which the student must decide between two arguments to reason mathematically about who is correct.

Part 2: Comparing Fractions with the Same Denominators

• Students will learn how to compare fractions with the same denominator but different numerators in this section. They learn and practice with
• a Which One Doesn’t Belong activity
• an embedded tutorial video explaining how to compare fractions with the same denominators but different numerators (with audio narration)
• 5 practice slides using draggable fraction strips
• a problem-solving activity involving a real-life context to compare and order fractions
• a problem-solving activity in which the student must decide between two arguments to reason mathematically about who is correct.

Part 3: Comparing Fractions with Different Denominators

• Students will learn how to compare fractions with different denominators but the same numerators in this section. They learn and practice with
• a Which Would You Rather Have activity
• an embedded tutorial video explaining how to compare fractions with different denominators but the same numerators (with audio narration)
• 5 practice slides using draggable fraction strips
• a problem-solving activity involving a real-life context to compare and order fractions
• a problem-solving activity in which the student must decide between two arguments to reason mathematically about who is correct.

• In this section, students self-reflect on what they have learned about comparing fractions.
• Use this section as a guide to remediate, reinforce, clear up misunderstandings or reinforce learning.
