This week long close reading project is a part of a larger text set on the topic of Video Games. Included in this packet is a close reading activity that has students focus on TWO texts with opposing viewpoints on showing the links between video games and violence.
Students will complete summaries, organizational webs assessing arguments, a short writing response, and vocabulary building activities. Overall, they will be exposed to all of the common core anchor standards for informational text.
This high interest topic is wonderful for engaging students and helping them prep for a very common test item of comparing arguments in two informational texts. A 10 question assessment is included at the end of the readings. The assessment is based on PARCC questions and strongly linked to standards.
The way this lesson is structured allows for many different teaching techniques from independent work to small group instruction, even whole class directed learning. Scaffolding on both ends of the spectrum is easily accessible in this packet and requires very little teacher prep!
