I created this activity for my second grade student teaching classroom. I used this after the students had a great deal of understanding of comparing sets and if they have a whole and a part then they need to subtract to find the other part. This activity was almost a reward for them. They absolutely love getting up and moving about with their classmates while doing math!
Cut up each square so that each student has their own individual square. They will either have a story problem or a bar model. Once each student has their own square I play any sort of St. Patrick’s Day music to get them up and moving about. This is similar to musical chairs. When the music stops the students need to stop dancing or moving about and find the other half of their problem. So they are either looking for the story problem that goes with their bar model or the bar model that coincides with their story problem. Once they are matched up they must solve the problem together and write the answer with the unit :) I have the students come up and share with the class their problem and answer. They always feel so proud!
