OVERVIEW:

These interactive notebook activities are a fun, engaging way to help your students understand the elements of an argument via comparing the articles “Wild Animal Aren’t Pets” and “Let People Own Exotic Animals.” Filled with cute illustrations and step-by-step directions, these activities are specifically designed to enhance the Non-fiction selections “Wild Animal Aren’t Pets” and “Let People Own Exotic Animals” from HMH Collections Grade 6, Collection 4.

Common core-based lesson plans, rubrics and keys are all included as well as easy to cut pieces that save time. For foldables, pictures and instructions are given as well. Every teacher has their own preference for notebook types. So, I have decided to design as a full 8 ½”X 11” inch page, which can be reduced on a copier by 75% to fit composition notebooks but would require trimming. I usually print off two pages per sheet on the copier and then cut in half, so I only have 1 cut and it fits perfectly into the composition book.

THESE ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

Vocabulary Notes and Activities

The vocabulary words in this selection are paired with five different options of activities teachers/students can choose from to complete. Comic strip, Writing with illustration, Note cards with foldable envelope, Frayer Models, and Vocab/Sentence/Meaning Matrix. The notes contain a key for easy class presentation.

Elements of Arguments Notes and Level Up Practice Activities

These easy to manage foldables are created with you in mind. You do not have to make as many copies and students do not have much cutting or confusing assembly. Pictures and directions are on both the handouts and on orange slides. Students use the Level Ups to fill out their notes and then do exercises in Level Ups, part of the eBook extras online.

Analyzing Arguments Graphic Organizers

Designed with a teacher example for the first one, students can work on the same style graphic organizer for student input as independent or partner practice. A rubric is also included for easy grading of this standard RI.6.8 Tracing and Evaluation Arguments.

Collaborative Discussion and Compare/Contrast Writing
Students can prepare, discuss and fill out their graphic organizers before sharing with the class. A guided writing paragraph follows that answers all of the compare/contrast questions in HMH Collections, Grade 6, p 230.

Performance Task
Students write an argumentative essay about an exotic animal in which they can include research to support their opinions.

Rubrics
Standards-based rubrics included for each writing assignment, which allows students to understand what they have accomplished or need to revise to improve their writing. I usually allow students to revise if they receive a 2 or lower (for me a 2 is a C) for a higher score (or grade).

This product was developed by an award-winning, highly qualified teacher and 22-year veteran of the classroom, with ESL and ESE certification. I use these materials with my students in my classroom, so I know what students respond to and I try to make materials in which ALL students can be successful.

ORGANIZATION OF INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK MATERIALS:
In this resource, you will find a variety of Interactive Notebook activities that will support your students’ understanding of the HMH Collections textbook.

Lessons Pages are the TEACHER input pages that are designed to be used as the right-hand side pages of the notebook. However, you can use them anyway you want. These lessons coincide with the lessons in the textbook that appear after every selection, however, they are recreated as an engaging guided notetaking activity with fun illustrations. Keys are provided for these resources, unless students are supposed to come up with the ideas as a class.

Activity Pages are the STUDENT output pages that are designed to be used on the left-hand side pages of the notebook. These often include writing, drawing, graphic organizers, etc. Rubrics for all writing assignments are included.
