Fifth grade has many comparing and contrasting standards. RL.5.3 is quite easy to find text which you can compare and contrast characters, settings, and events. However, RL.5.9 was always difficult to find texts within the same genre without doing 2 full novel studies in a short 9-weeks to explore themes.
These activities bring together the survival/adventure genre while being able to compare and contrast the characters, setting, and themes all at once.
After reading Hatchet, there is an excerpt from Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell that you will use along with lesson suggestions and activities.
