This presentation compares and contrasts the antebellum North and South economically and socially. It includes Manifest Destiny spawned new technologies that "shrank" the nation such as the railroads and telegraphs. It includes how Eli Whitney's well-intentioined cotton gin had the unintended consequence of exploding the demand for cotton and therefore exploding the population and spread of slavery. It includes the resulting conflicts between Northern and Southern states over the spread of slavery and the resulting compromises to delay the inevitable Civil War.
