These tasks are designed to provide an opportunity for students to explore the measurement of mass. They involve the use of video cameras to record and reflect on experiences, thus integrating ICT. They are aligned with the Australian Curriculum for Year 2.
In the first task, students collaborate with others as they compare and measure the mass of a range of items. They measure using uniform informal units, and begin to develop skills required for accurate measurement. (A second option is provided for teachers who do not choose to use video cameras for recording.)
As a follow-up rich task, students are challenged to select a number of items to meet mass requirements. This task is linked to a short story about Little Red Riding Hood and the items she takes in her basket when she goes to visit her grandmother’s house.
