This 2-Day No Prep Packet
will have kids comparing and ordering decimals with fluency, but also understanding the place value behind it at a deep, conceptual level.
I broke this lesson into two-days because I have seen that students understand comparing and ordering decimals more thoroughly when they see it in fraction form first.
Day 1, students convert every decimal into a fraction and find a common denominator to compare.
-Example 0.7 = 7/10 = 70/100 and is greater than 0.37 = 37/100
Day 2, students leave decimals in decimal form by line them up vertically and add zeros in missing places. This helps them connect the decimal form to the fraction form and builds the understanding that the place name of a decimal and the denominator of its equivalent fraction are one and the same.
Both Lessons Include:
-Teacher Lead Problem Set
-Independent Practice that builds in difficulty
This lesson aligns perfectly with any 5th grade decimal unit, but could also be used for 4th grade (4.NF.C.6 or 4.NF.C.7).
