Students work in pairs to compete in this circle game. Usually, I'll project the game board on the front board and let two students play, or I'll highlight the word(s) myself to help students engage.
To play, students sit in pairs (groups get too rowdy). The teacher calls, "Como se dice ____ en espanol?" and the students must race to be the first to circle the Spanish word on the game board. Since the students have different colored markers, crayons, etc, this is very easy to formatively assess.
Often times, I will also add mini tasks to the game. Before a student can circle a word or pick up their writing utensil, they will have to say the days of the week, play a handclap game, put their hands in the air, etc.
One of my students' favorites!
