This unit packet is complete with activities for making connections for older students, from simple similes to complex analogies.
This packet includes Vocabulary PowerPoint presentations in the ExC-ELL format, as well as notes on making comparisons and literal vs. figurative understanding. Also included are 7 pages of worksheets with similes, metaphors, personification and analogies, which serve to help students see connections in their world and their lives.
These activities are scaffolded and differentiated: teacher decides on groupings for analyzing the text, and decides the extent to which comparisons are explored. Teacher might supply clues to guide students to the connection or have students work with no hints whatever. Based on student level, final assessment can be one of the worksheets or the double-entry text making figurative comparisons in “February Selection 2,” a delightful piece that includes a variety of all four types of comparisons. Duration depends on teacher objectives, usually one to two weeks. Kid tested, teacher approved!
