This unit is designed to be five days long. The unit teaches students about the 50 states. Students will learn about how states are both similar to each other and also very different from each other. This unit includes all the needed materials:

Students will learn in-depth information on one particular state. They will practice looking for, reading, and using information from books as well as the internet. They will have a chance to create a creative project. The unit will incorporate two writing activities that address language arts standards. Students will be able to edit and revise their writing and will also practice typing. The unit will also include a lesson on regions of the US, and a lesson on population data which will incorporate grade-level math practice which addressed math standards. The unit will culminate with “State Night” which will give the students a chance to show their families and friends the “exhibits” they have created as well as build community in the class through the sharing of special edible treats that represent the states. Overall, the goal is that students will come away from the unit with a deeper understanding of how the 50 states all contribute unique elements that make up our diverse nation.
